Generative AI hallucinates (despite its inability to ingest mushrooms). But once the problem was recognized, technologists have been taking steps to reduce hallucinations. In generative AI, “hallucinating” means, in essence, making up sometimes-fantastic answers, like a sixth grader who didn’t read the book for their report. Or a politician. Of course, making up answers makes AI less reliable, so it’s not a light thing.

But an MIT technology review article about building next-generation infrastructure points out that while AI may never be entirely error-free, human intervention can catch AI’s mistakes. And while some are concerned that AI may replace humans in construction (despite the labor shortage), there are elements in every construction project that only humans can do.

The hype around AI, combined with science fiction books and movies, overstates AI’s capabilities, at least for the present. According to the report, “… Additional training for engineers to supervise and maintain the automated systems is key so that each side can work together optimally. Skilled workers have creativity and intuition, as well as customer service expertise, while AI is not yet capable of such novel solutions.”

The Rise of Artificial Intelligence in Construction

The construction industry is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the rapid adoption of digital technologies. Among these, artificial intelligence (AI) stands out as a powerful tool reshaping how construction projects are planned, executed, and managed. One of the primary applications of AI in construction is project planning and management.  AI also plays a significant role in enhancing on-site safety. Computer vision technologies monitor construction sites in real-time, identifying safety. AI-powered tools are becoming integral to the design phase of construction projects. Generative design, an AI-driven process, allows architects and engineers to input specific design goals and constraints and receive a range of optimized design options. – Construction Today
